Mechanical testing encompasses a variety of methods to measure the properties of materials by observing their reactions to the application of a force, such as compression, tension, impact, bending, or hardness. It is a crucial step in ensuring that components comply with specification requirements in quality, safety, and fitness for purpose.
The main purpose of mechanical testing is to determine the strength of a material or a piece of equipment. Tensile test, also known as tension test, is the most fundamental type of mechanical test. This reveals a great amount of information about a material and quantifies the important properties. Lifting equipment engineers need to know these properties so as to understand the material specifications and relate these to their suitability for lifting operation
We offer both on-site and off-site mechanical testing services. Whenever possible, hydraulics are used for higher tonnage tests to ensure the safety of our engineers while maintaining accuracy and control during the test procedure.
System Testing/Verification is a generic term used to describe the procedure/method adopted by the manufacture or Competent person to ensure that lifting equipment is of the required standard or specification, that it meets legal/regulatory requirements and is safe to operate. This may include loading testing, functional testing, stress testing, sample breaking testing, calculation, measurement and thorough examination.
All lifting equipment must be verified:
1. To ensure it is safe before first use and,
2. Periodically once it is in service to ensure it remains safe to use
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) involves the use of measuring techniques to detect damage and/or irregularities in materials, providing valuable information about the fitness for purpose of safety-critical components. It is an essential tool for ensuring safe operation, quality control, and assessing plant life.
Proper selection and application of NDT processes can provide confidence that a piece of plant or individual components are free from defects.
NDT encompasses various techniques, including Ultrasonic Inspection, Automated Ultrasonic Inspection, Eddy Current, Time of Flight (TOFD), Radiographic Inspection, Magnetic Particle Inspection, and Dye Penetrant Inspection. These methods can be adapted to automated production processes as well as used to inspect localized problem areas.
Ropetech offer Proof Load Testing and Overload Testing Services. Load Testing involves applying a load to a structure, material, or piece of equipment to verify its strength. A proof load test is usually expressed as a percentage of the working load limit (WLL) or safe working load (SWL) that the equipment is designed to withstand.
Proof Load Testing of lifting equipment is required to ensure that items of lifting equipment can perform to the required standard and in accordance with the designed safe working load (SWL) or working load limit (WLL) calculated by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) during the design and manufacturing process.
When is a Proof Load Test Required?
After the equipment has been manufactured, Installed, Repaired, Modified, or Refurbished.
Following an incident.
A competent person may also require a proof load test to be carried out during a Thorough Examination process to determine whether a piece of lifting equipment is safe to use.
